A while back woodcarver Owen brought in some scraps from a project that was completed at his woodworking job. The pieces were too small for furniture or cabinets but the woodcarvers have made lots of different projects from the wood. Robyn's Elephant takes the prize. The knot makes a perfect eye for this piece that is going to a 4 year old elephant enthusiast.
The long timers in the studio have often heard my beginning woodcarving spiel and how these skills can come in handy. Here is Ashley marking an uneven border using her pinky and ring finger as the guide. It worked great on this uneven bowl shape.
Robyn used a galvanized construction strong tie, cut it into the bottom of her abstract carving and turned two carved pieces into bookends. The metal was covered with cork and it worked to both cover the metal as well as give the bottom some non stick characteristics. Very clever.
I carved this piece a bit ago. This was carved from a large branch pruned from a tree in my friend Susan Koenig's back yard. Just last month Susan had to have the huge tree removed. The mask told me he needed to go live with Susan. You don't argue with masks when they talk to you.
Measuring in at just under 3 inches, this little guy came to me in need of a hand, two feet and a hunk of beard. Since there was no indication of just what the hand was doing I let him sit for a bit until it was clear he wanted a walking stick to hold in the hand I was going to carve. A tooth pick was just the right size.
Here he is all ready for a walk in the Black Forest.
I made this Red Rocking Horse toy for my Grand daughter. I used Blackberries, Raspberries and Blueberries to stain the Oak. It then has a coating of mineral oil and Beeswax. It went straight into her mouth as soon as she saw it.
